Chef
DJ CHEF is a deeply rooted figure in drum & bass and dubstep culture, a selector, broadcaster, and curator whose journey through the underground spans over three decades. Emerging from the raw energy of the early 1990s, Chef cut his teeth on the London pirate radio circuit at the tail end of 1993, immersed in the hardcore jungle movement that defined a generation. Alongside crews such as the East London Connection, he developed a foundation built on authentic sound system culture, learning to read crowds and navigate the full spectrum of bass music from the very beginning.
His early years on pirate radio became the backbone of his career, with sets broadcast across London and the South East, helping to shape his wide-ranging approach to DJing. Refusing to be boxed into a single style, Chef became known for his versatility, seamlessly moving between rolling drum & bass, darker tech-driven sounds, and bass-heavy dubstep. This adaptability earned him a reputation as a DJ who could command any dancefloor, regardless of tempo or mood.
A pivotal moment came when Chef stepped onto the legendary Kool FM 94.5, where a guest appearance alongside Bud caught the attention of Eastman. That opportunity quickly evolved into a long-standing residency, with Chef and Bud holding down a weekly Thursday night show for an incredible 15 years. During this time, Chef became a trusted voice in the scene, delivering cutting-edge selections while championing both established names and emerging talent.
Beyond the decks, Chef has played a significant role in nurturing the culture from behind the scenes. His involvement in record labels stretches back to the pre-digital era, where he helped create platforms for artists to showcase their music. Through Caution Recordings and later ventures, he has consistently supported new talent from across the globe, reinforcing his commitment to the future of drum & bass.
Chef’s collaborative work with MC GQ has further cemented his influence, co-running imprints such as Emcee Recordings and JustNoyze. These labels reflect a clear ethos: discovering fresh voices while maintaining a standard of quality rooted in the foundations of the genre. Over more than two decades, this dedication has resulted in a steady stream of releases that balance authenticity with forward-thinking sound design.
In recent years, Chef has expanded his presence as a broadcaster, launching a series of shows on Pyro Radio in 2019. These shows have become a hub for conversation and connection within the scene, featuring interviews with a wide spectrum of artists, from pioneers to the next generation. His continued appearances on platforms like Rinse FM, Rough Tempo, and Mixcloud further highlight his relevance in today’s landscape.
As a producer, Chef has released music on respected labels including Renegade Hardware, Tactile Kevlar, STFU, U Understand Me Music, and Paralisim Records. Now ফিরে in the studio with renewed focus, he is exploring new projects, collaborations, and cross-genre ideas, pushing his sound into fresh territory while staying true to his roots.
With decades of experience, an ear for innovation, and an unwavering passion for bass music, DJ CHEF remains a vital force in drum & bass culture—constantly evolving, always authentic, and firmly connected to the heartbeat of the underground.
