Our Long Dark Tunnel Clothing Range
We’ve always loved the seminal Jungle anthem Valley of the Shadows by Original Unknown (Andy C). It’s a tune that never ages, a tune that hits number 1 every time we ask for a vote on peoples favourite Jungle track. It’s a stone cold classic.
So we set to work with Defaced Designs to make a T-Shirt which we felt embodied the vibe of the track and was instantly recognisable.
We worked through a tonne of ideas and different directions before settling on the theme that eventually became our Long Dark Tunnel Designs.
The Classic Jungle Track
Valley of the Shadows was produced by Andy C and Ant Miles, who together formed Origin Unknown. Andy C, was just a teenager when “Valley of the Shadows” was created. Originally, it was intended as a B-side to the single “The Touch,” but it quickly outshined the A-side.
“Valley of the Shadows” is sometimes referred to by its famous vocal snippet: “Long dark tunnel…”. It features the classic line “Felt that I was in this long dark tunnel…” These samples, taken from a BBC documentary about out-of-body experiences and near-death states, add a haunting, ethereal quality that perfectly complements the track’s brooding bassline and tight breakbeats. The sparse, almost hypnotic atmosphere of the song was a departure from the more upbeat and rave-oriented tracks of the time. It was darker, deeper, and more introspective — a signpost of where jungle was heading.
Musically, the track is built around a combination of looped Amen breakbeats, deep sub-bass, and eerie synth stabs.
The influence of “Valley of the Shadows” can be seen across the entire spectrum of electronic music. It has been remixed, sampled, and referenced by countless artists, and it remains a staple in classic jungle and drum and bass DJ sets. It’s not just a nostalgic relic; it still holds weight on dance floors due to its timeless production and evocative atmosphere.
