Sully
Sully is one of the UK’s most distinctive and quietly influential bass artists. He has built a devoted following through music that feels deeply personal, emotionally rich, and rooted in the foundations of UK rave culture rather than fleeting trends.
Working under the alias Sully, Jack Stevens draws his sound from the swing of 2-step, the pressure of early dubstep, and the rhythmic bite of early nineties breakbeats, his productions have always carried the raw attitude of Jungle at their core. Emerging from the grime and garage underground in the late 2000s, he quickly stood apart through an instinctive feel for rhythm and melody.
Early EPs such as Phonebox and Jackman’s Rec revealed a producer with rare balance, able to write tender, almost fragile melodies while maintaining serious low-end impact. His debut album Carrier arrived in 2011 as a broad statement of intent, but it was Blue in 2014 that firmly re-connected his sound with jungle, blending warmth, swing and intricate drum programming into something both familiar and forward-thinking.
Over the years, Sully has become an essential voice in the modern Drum and Bass and Jungle continuum. Releases on Astrophonica, Rua Sound, Over/Shadow and Ilian Tape highlight his precision with breaks, his ear for emotional harmony, and his deep understanding of rave history. Tracks like Flock, 5ives and Swandive have become go-to selections for DJs navigating the space between heritage and innovation.
Although his music carries clear echoes of ’90s jungle and early UK garage, Sully’s approach is unmistakably contemporary. His productions feel carefully considered, spacious and restrained, designed to resonate just as strongly in solitary listening as they do on a powerful sound system.
Avoiding hype and spectacle, Sully has allowed his catalogue to grow steadily and naturally. The result is a body of work with longevity, music that rewards repeated listening and continues to gain meaning over time.
