Adam F: The Producer Who Took Drum & Bass from the Underground to the Charts
Adam F, real name Adam Fenton, is one of the British producers who helped bring drum & bass to a wider audience without losing touch with its underground roots. His 1995 single Circles, 1996 Metalheadz release Metropolis and debut album Colours established him as a leading figure during the genre’s formative years. He would later work with major hip-hop artists, produce film soundtracks and co-found Breakbeat Kaos, a label that became an important part of drum & bass during the 2000s.
Born in Liverpool on 8 February 1972, Fenton grew up in a musical family. His father was singer and actor Alvin Stardust, but his own interests developed around jazz, funk, hip-hop and electronic music. As a teenager, he became fascinated by keyboards, turntablism and the musical arrangements behind film soundtracks, influences that would distinguish his approach to production.
Discovering Jungle
Fenton’s introduction to rave came in 1993, when he attended the Big Love festival in Wiltshire and saw The Prodigy perform. He subsequently explored the emerging jungle scene, finding inspiration in the jazz-influenced productions of LTJ Bukem and the possibilities of combining complex breakbeats with melodic arrangements.
By the mid-1990s, he was releasing music as Adam F, developing a style that brought together the fast rhythms of jungle with elements of jazz fusion, soul and funk.
Circles: The Breakthrough
First released in 1995 on Section 5, Circles became Adam F’s signature production. Built around a distinctive melodic hook and rolling breakbeats, it stood apart from much of the darker, more aggressive jungle being played at the time.
The track incorporated elements of Bob James’ jazz-funk composition Westchester Lady, alongside sampled material from Blackstreet and Tameka Starr. Its musicality and carefully constructed arrangement helped it stand out on the dancefloor.
Circles circulated through DJ sets and dubplates, gaining support from influential DJs including Grooverider. Following a re-release in 1997, it reached number 20 on the UK Singles Chart and topped the UK Dance Singles Chart.
Its success demonstrated that drum & bass could reach beyond its underground audience without abandoning the breakbeats and musical detail at its core.
Metalheadz and Metropolis
In 1996, Adam F released Metropolis alongside Mother Earth on Metalheadz, the influential label founded by Goldie, Kemistry and Storm. The release became another defining moment in his career.
Where Circles showcased his melodic side, Metropolis explored a darker, more futuristic sound, built around intricate drums and cinematic atmosphere. Goldie became interested in the track after hearing Grooverider play it at London’s Blue Note club. It subsequently won Best Drum & Bass Tune at the 1996/97 Muzik Awards.
Adam F was now established among the producers shaping the genre, working within the same wider musical movement as Doc Scott, Photek and Source Direct.
