General Levy
Born Paul Scott Levy in Park Royal, North West London, General Levy grew up surrounded by reggae, calypso, hip-hop and soul, the full soundtrack of Britain’s multicultural melting pot. By his teens he was deep in sound-system culture, building rigs, hosting parties and clashing rival crews across Harlesden and Wembley. His sharp, percussive vocal delivery inspired by Jamaican toasting and London slang, set him apart from other artists at the time.
Levy’s first recordings in the late ’80s and early ’90s were pure UK dancehall energy. Working with labels like Fashion Records and producers such as Gussie P, he dropped tracks like Original Length and Strength and Heat, which earned him accolades and respect across the reggae scene.
In 1994, he linked up with producer M-Beat to create Incredible, a record that would become one of the defining anthems of the era. With its explosive Amen break and Levy’s breathless flow, Incredible crossed over from pirate radio to the UK Top 10, pushing jungle from underground warehouses to the mainstream charts.
Of course, the ride wasn’t without turbulence. A quote in The Face magazine, where Levy reportedly said he “runs jungle” saw Levy blacklisted from some raves and shunned by aspects of the scene. But Incredible had already cemented his legend. Decades later, it still shuts down dancefloors around the world.
Levy never stopped evolving. Across the 2000s and beyond, he continued to mix reggae, jungle and drum & bass on his own terms. Albums like We Progressive showcased his adaptability, while collaborations with dub legends like Joe Ariwa and new-school bass producers proved his sound could move across generations. In 2019, he launched his own label, GLM Records, dropping conscious, high-energy tracks like Jah Jah Guide and Protect that pushed his message of unity, positivity, roots culture.
Live, he’s unstoppable. From European festivals to UK club nights, Levy commands the mic with veteran confidence and youthful fire. His sets are a masterclass in crowd control, full of reloads and energy.
