DJ Marky

DJ Marky is one of the most influential figures to emerge from Brazil’s Drum & Bass scene, a DJ and producer whose technical ability, musical knowledge and distinctive approach helped take the Brazilian sound onto the international stage. Born Marco Antonio da Silva in São Paulo, Marky became known for energetic sets that blended intricate mixing with soulful, funk-driven Drum & Bass. His breakthrough collaboration ‘LK’ with XRS in 2002 reached the UK Top 20, establishing him as one of the genre’s leading international artists.

Marky’s musical education began at home. His father was a keen record collector and multi-instrumentalist, introducing him to Brazilian music, samba, jazz, soul and funk. Records by artists including Jorge Ben, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles and Miles Davis helped shape his broad musical outlook, influences that would later distinguish his productions from the darker, more minimal sounds also emerging from the UK scene.

He became interested in DJing as a child after watching Malcolm McLaren’s video for ‘Buffalo Gals’ in the early 1980s. Inspired by the turntables and mixing techniques he saw, he began practising at home and playing parties for friends. Without the money for professional equipment, he initially learned to mix using reel-to-reel tape machines before eventually progressing to turntables.

By the early 1990s, Marky was playing regularly in São Paulo and developing his reputation as a versatile selector. His sets moved through hip-hop, reggae, house and funk before he discovered the emerging sounds of British hardcore and Jungle. Tracks by artists such as A Guy Called Gerald, N-Joi and The Prodigy introduced him to a new style of electronic music that was difficult to obtain in Brazil at the time.

As Jungle gained popularity in Brazil around 1994 and 1995, Marky became one of its leading local DJs. He worked at the record shop Up Dance Records, developed a regular following through club appearances and presented radio shows that helped bring the music to a wider audience. His growing reputation was recognised when he was voted Brazil’s DJ of the Year in both 1995 and 1996.

The Brazilian Movement

While many British listeners remained unaware of the growing Brazilian scene, Marky was already building a substantial following at home. His success included a Drum & Bass and Jungle compilation released through the UK label Suburban Base Records, helping connect audiences on opposite sides of the Atlantic.

The turning point came in 1998, when V Recordings boss Bryan Gee saw Marky playing at a São Paulo nightclub. Recognising his exceptional mixing ability and the energy he brought to the dancefloor, Gee invited him to perform in London. Marky subsequently made his UK breakthrough at Movement, the influential Jungle and Drum & Bass night held at Mass in Brixton.

His performances made an immediate impression. Rather than relying on a narrow selection of records, Marky brought an expansive musical knowledge and an instinctive understanding of how to build a set. His rapid mixing, precise timing and ability to move between different moods distinguished him from many of the DJs operating in the scene at the time.

British promoters quickly recognised his potential. He became associated with Movement, played on Kiss FM through Jumping Jack Frost’s show and joined the V Recordings touring circuit. In 1999, his growing profile earned him considerable attention from British dance music press, with his arrival widely regarded as one of the most exciting developments in Drum & Bass DJing.

Marky also helped bring other Brazilian artists to international attention, including DJ Patife and XRS. Together, they demonstrated that Brazilian Drum & Bass could develop its own identity rather than simply copying British production styles. Their music retained the breakbeats and basslines of UK Jungle while incorporating Brazilian melodies, warmer harmonies and influences from the country’s rich musical heritage.

The early 2000s proved decisive. In 2001, Marky worked with DJ Patife on the ‘Brazil EP’ for V Recordings, which included ‘Sambassim’, featuring Brazilian vocalist Fernanda Porto. The track became an important example of the soulful, melodic direction emerging from Brazil and helped influence a wider wave of more musical, uplifting Drum & Bass.

His collaboration with XRS produced an even bigger breakthrough. Released in 2002, ‘LK (Carolina Carol Bela)’ built its infectious melody around a sample from the Brazilian track ‘Carolina Carol Bela’ by Jorge Ben and Toquinho. Marky had grown up hearing the original at home, making the sample a direct connection between his childhood musical influences and his work as a Drum & Bass producer.

The track combined the familiar Brazilian melody with fast breakbeats, rolling bass and a memorable vocal contribution from Stamina MC. It reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart, an unusual achievement for an underground Drum & Bass production and one that helped bring the Brazilian sound to a much larger audience.

Marky’s international profile continued to grow. He presented the One World show on BBC Radio 1 in 2000, recorded a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix in 2004 and became a regular presence at clubs and festivals worldwide. His technical skill earned him further recognition, including the Best International DJ award at the Knowledge Magazine Awards in 2001.

Establishing Innerground Records

In 2003, Marky and XRS established Innerground Records as an outlet for their own productions and music from artists sharing their approach to Drum & Bass. The label became an important part of the Brazilian scene’s international development, releasing material that balanced dancefloor energy with melody, soul and musical experimentation.

Their album In Rotation, released in 2004, brought together this approach across a collection of productions that reflected their shared musical interests. Marky continued to expand his catalogue with releases including The Wizard in 2006 and The Master Plan in 2007, while his DJ compilations documented the range of music moving through his sets. His FABRICLIVE.55 mix, released in 2011, further showcased his skills as a selector.

Marky released his first solo artist album, My Heroes, on Innerground Records in 2015. The title reflected the importance of the people and musicians who had influenced him, bringing his personal musical history into a collection shaped by years of experience behind the decks.

During the following decade, he continued collaborating with artists from across the international scene, including Makoto, S.P.Y, Total Science and Pola & Bryson. His productions remained recognisable for their combination of energetic rhythms, melodic detail and a strong sense of groove.

In 2023, Marky released The Time Is Right through Shogun Audio. Featuring collaborations with artists including Makoto, SOLAH, Pola & Bryson, MC GQ and Harry Shotta, the album demonstrated the continuing evolution of his sound while reaffirming his connection to the foundations of Drum & Bass. Subsequent releases included the Kochi EP in 2024, alongside further collaborations and remixes.

Marky has continued releasing music into 2026, including work with Makoto and SOLAH, reinforcing a career built on collaboration and an enduring curiosity about different musical styles.

More than three decades after he began DJing in São Paulo, Marky remains a central figure in international Drum & Bass. His career helped establish Brazil as an important part of the genre’s history, while his productions and performances demonstrated that technical precision and dancefloor energy could sit alongside musical warmth and cultural identity.
