MC Five Alive
MC FiveAlive is one of the enduring voices of the British jungle and drum & bass scene, an MC whose career stretches back to the formative years of the culture and whose name has become closely associated with some of the UK’s most respected DJs, events and radio stations. Known for his energetic, crowd-focused style, FiveAlive has spent more than two decades on the microphone, moving between old-school jungle, hardcore and drum and bass.
He is particularly associated with the legendary Warning events and the wider Cambridge and Hertfordshire drum & bass circuit. During the late ’90s and early 2000s, Warning established itself as one of the UK’s important independent drum & bass events, bringing together a formidable roster of DJs and MCs. FiveAlive was a regular presence alongside names including Shabba, Navigator, Skibadee, IC3 and GQ establishing himself as part of a generation of MCs who helped define the sound and atmosphere of UK drum & bass events.
FiveAlive’s approach to MCing has always been rooted in energy and interaction. Rather than simply providing vocal punctuation over a DJ set, his role is about driving the room, responding to the music and keeping the crowd connected to what is happening behind the decks. That makes him equally comfortable over fast old-school breaks, rolling liquid rhythms or the harder-edged sounds of contemporary drum & bass.
A major part of FiveAlive’s career has also been his connection with Good Looking Records and the wider soulful and atmospheric side of drum & bass. His partnership with DJ Nookie became particularly significant, with the two appearing together on numerous occasions and even receiving an official Good Looking Records release for Live @ Progression Sessions, The End, London. The recording captures the combination that became familiar to audiences: Nookie’s musical selections and FiveAlive’s energetic vocal presence.
Their partnership extended well beyond London. In 2007, Nookie and FiveAlive performed together at Bassfalter in Bochum, Germany, with the two-hour set demonstrating that their connection worked just as effectively outside the UK. More than a decade later, they were still appearing together, including a 2018 old-school hardcore set in Brighton built around Nookie’s Cloud 9 material and the 1991–94 rave era.
FiveAlive’s relationship with Kool FM is another important part of his story. The station has played a central role in preserving and broadcasting London’s jungle and drum & bass culture, and FiveAlive has been listed as a host alongside Kool FM DJs since at least the mid-2000s. His presence on the station placed him firmly within the pirate-radio tradition that has been fundamental to the development of British jungle.
The Warning connection, meanwhile, remained a constant. FiveAlive appeared on increasingly major lineups as the 2000s progressed, sharing bills with Andy C, DJ Hype, Grooverider, Fabio, Dillinja, Goldie, Micky Finn, Ray Keith, DJ Die and many others. At Warning’s 16th birthday at Cambridge Junction in 2011, he was part of a huge MC lineup that included Skibadee, Shabba, IC3, Funsta, Harry Shotta and Fatman D.
These lineups illustrate the position FiveAlive occupied within the scene. He wasn’t simply an MC attached to one particular sound or DJ; he was part of the wider rave infrastructure, appearing across different generations and styles while maintaining his own recognisable presence.
By the 2010s, FiveAlive was continuing to appear across the country, from dedicated jungle and drum & bass nights to larger rave events. His name appeared alongside DJs including Nicky Blackmarket, Kenny Ken, Fabio, Digital, A Guy Called Gerald and Nookie, demonstrating the breadth of his musical connections.
That old-school connection remains important to FiveAlive’s identity today. Rather than being defined purely by nostalgia, however, his career has continued to evolve alongside the wider drum & bass scene. He has remained active at events and on radio, appearing on contemporary lineups alongside both established pioneers and newer generations of DJs and producers.
His connection with the MC Conrad legacy is another significant part of his recent work. In 2024, Rinse FM’s Indigo Reign hosted a special four-hour tribute to MC Conrad, bringing together artists and friends including Nookie, Makoto, MC Chickaboo, Cleveland Watkiss, DJ Kane and FiveAlive. The programme explored Conrad’s life, music and influence, with FiveAlive contributing alongside members of the wider community who had been connected to the legendary MC.
The relationship is particularly fitting given FiveAlive’s long association with the Good Looking and soulful drum & bass world. Conrad’s influence on MCing was enormous, helping establish a more musical and lyrical approach to the role, and FiveAlive’s continued involvement in that community demonstrates how closely connected the generations of the scene remain.
FiveAlive remains a familiar name to generations of ravers. His career has followed the evolution of jungle itself, from the hardcore explosion of the early ’90s, through the golden era of jungle and drum & bass, the rise of liquid and deeper sounds, the dominance of major club events and pirate radio, and into today’s renewed appreciation for the music’s history.
What makes FiveAlive’s story particularly interesting is its longevity. He has never been defined by one producer, one label or one generation. Instead, his career has been built through relationships with DJs, promoters, radio stations, crews and, most importantly, dancefloors.
From Warning and Kool FM to Good Looking Records and his long-running partnership with Nookie, FiveAlive has remained part of the connective tissue of British drum & bass. His microphone has travelled through countless clubs, warehouses, radio studios and festivals, helping keep the energy of the music alive across generations.
