Micky Finn
Micky Finn
Born Michael Hearn in South London, Micky Finn grew up during the rise of Britain’s sound system and pirate radio culture. By the late ’80s, he was already a fixture on the underground circuit, spinning acid house and early breakbeat at illegal raves across the country. The sound and energy of his sets set him apart from other DJ’s and as part of Rave evolved into Jungle, Micky Finn was right there at the front of the movement, shaping its sound from the decks and with his releases.
Micky’s roots were pure London: street parties, record shops, and pirate frequencies. His sets on stations like Fantasy FM and Kool FM captured the raw energy of the city’s dance underground, fast breakbeats, samples and heavy basslines.
His first release She’s Breaking Up (Bionic Man) and his team up with Aphrodite and Claudio Giussani as Urban Shakedown with Some Justice, cemented his position as it hit Top 40 on it’s re-release. Micky and Aphrodite formed a life long working relationship later founding Urban Takeover and releasing the seminal track Bad Ass.
Described in the first DJ Magazine Top 100 DJ’s as “a cult figure who can sell out the biggest nights”. His influence in the Drum and Bass and UK music scene goes beyond that of just a DJ and Producer. His entrepreneurial spirit has seen him set up a long running DJ agency as well as the legendary raves, Innovation and Sunbeatz and of course the ground breaking AWOL.
Across three decades, he’s stayed one of the scene’s most respected figures, a selector who bridges the old and new schools effortlessly. From early breakbeat and acid house through Jungle and into jump-up, Micky Finn embodies the evolution of British bass music: loyal to the roots, but always moving forward.
